Design[]

Basis[]

Matthew is an 0-4-0 saddle tank believed to have been built by the Avonside Engine Company of Bristol, but prior to being purchased second or third hand by Sir Topham Hatt he acquired components from Hunslet of Leeds and other builders.

Liveries[]

When Matthew was first built on the Great Northern Railway in 1899, he was painted dark green with cream lining. He had the initials "GNR" on the sides of his bunker.

In 1922, Matthew was painted deep purple with pale gold lining, a livery identical to Ryan. The initials "GNR" remained on his bunker.

Sometime between 1971 and his arrival on Sodor in 2016, Matthew was repainted white with red lining. The number "326" was painted on his bunker, replacing the initials that had previously been there. His wheels had red rims and he had red piston rods.

In 2031, Matthew was repainted medium blue with purple lining, the livery he still carries. His number remained and is now purple. His piston rods are also now painted purple.

Appearances Throughout the Years[]

Matthew debuted in the seventh season of Stories From Sodor. He was one of the lesser used of Jacobacranmer's locomotive characters, appearing in only seven episodes.

He was then absent completely from the Jacob and Friends:All Grown Up spin-off series.

In Stories From Sodor:Future, however, although still not used nearly as much as other locomotive characters, Matthew has begun appearing more in the later seasons and has appeared in seventeen episodes so far.

In Jacob, Kevin, and Friends:Past Adventures, Matthew appears solely in the fourth season. This season, however, centers around him, Brady, Olivia, Kylie, Benjamin, Ryan, and Rylie.
